I thought I was being summonsed by a woman tied to a light pole somewhere. As it turns out, it was just a neighborhood chicken saying good morning. Not sure what they feed their chickens here in Maine, but I’m sure there are some opera singers who would like some of that.
7-30-2022 Gregorian 576 Natural I have not stayed in a hotel, I have not eaten at a restaurant and haven’t visited a laundramat since starting this journey. Aside from how expensive it all is, I sincerely haven’t wanted to go into such places. (Don’t worry, I’m eating and sleeping well and washing my clothes in a bucket.) 7-29-2022 Gregorian
575 Natural I’m sleeping well these days. And no matter how bleary-eyed I feel in the morning, I always know what to do. My routine is the same. Make coffee, drink coffee, enjoy the morning. Eventually I put on my boots and start walking. What do I think about while I’m walking? So far, my mind is occupied with walking responsibly, keeping a safe distance from moving vehicles and watching my step. Occasionally my mind wanders. I notice my shadow stretched out before me or catch a glimpse of myself in a window as I pass and think, you know, Einstein’s hair wasn’t really all that bad. 7-27-2022 Gregorian 573 Natural
7-26-2022 Gregorian 572 Natural I took a couple of days off from walking to tour coastal Maine before heading inland. The experience is one I will remember forever. Here are some scenes from Belfast.

570 Natural I’ve always been a fan of folding maps, charts and atlases, but for investigating roadways with pull-offs or parking spots, paper maps just don’t cut it. Google maps seems the best so far, so whether or not an area is within range of an Internet signal is a major factor for now. 7–23-2022 Gregorian 569 Natural One week into this journey and already I could write a small book about all I’ve learned, some about myself and a lot about the highways and byways of Maine. But I’ll spare you the book and just hit the highlights. I’m learning anew the importance of balance — eletrolytes, hydration, sun exposure — all the stuff that goes with day-to-day strenuous outdoor activity. How am I learning it? The hard way, as usual. And that’s where I’ll leave that for now. (You know, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.) I’m also learning anew how exquisite the sun and the shade, the wind and the rain feel on my skin. I drop off at night to the singing cicadas and wake to the sound of morning gulls and the scent of sea breeze. In Maine, you’re always close to nature and to the very heart of existence. My biggest challenge in Maine is to find a place to park Max, my van, while I walk. There seems to be inadequate space at the side of roads to park a vehicle. Along some major highways are bike paths rather than shoulders. On other highways there are either very narrow or non-existent shoulders with sharp drop-offs due to the hilly nature of the region. I can park Max at pull-offs, vacant parking lots or businesses with extra parking space, but many areas in rural Maine have none of these options. So my task for now is to find an extended roadway where I can walk across Maine without abandoning my van. Lyrics Ain't got no troubles in my life No foolish dream to make me cry. I'm never frightened or worried, I know I'll always get by. I heat up (I heat up) I cool down (I cool down) When something gets in my way I go round it. Don't let life get me down Gonna take life the way that I found it. I got the music in me I got the music in me I got the music in me I got the music in me I got the music in me I got the music in me They say that life is a circle (circle) But that ain't the way that I've found it. Gonna move in a straight line (ooh) Keeping my feet firmly on the ground. I heat up (I heat up) I cool down (I cool down) I got words in my head so I say them. Don't let life get me down, Catch a hold of my blues and just play them. Cindy K. CurrierThis is not the sort of walk across America where the goal is not necessarily to arrive from point A to point B. It’s a new lifetyle, for now, where walking allows time and space to meet the ground and the sky, and the people who dwell in between; and through the process, introduce America to Natural Law.
